Sharing the Story of Service

Suzanne Knapp, Public Relations Chair

Public Relations is an essential part of how we strengthen awareness of the American Legion Auxiliary’s mission. Every Unit has meaningful stories of service, and effective PR helps ensure those stories inspire others, attract new members, and highlight the Auxiliary’s commitment to “Service Not Self.”

Showcasing Service Across Our Units

Michigan Units continue to demonstrate remarkable dedication through their projects and community partnerships. Sharing these accomplishments not only honors our members’ work but also helps the public understand the impact of the ALA.

Units have recently completed many successful Give 10 to Education donations for local schools. Units across the state frequently conduct projects such as hygiene kit drives for homeless veterans, supporting VA hospital programs, and sponsoring ALA Girls State delegates, each one a story worth telling.

Building Relationships Through Communication

Public Relations helps strengthen relationships with veterans, Posts, SAL Squadrons, and community partners. Many Units share updates on their work with VA medical centers, highlight volunteer events, or promote joint activities with the American Legion Family. These efforts build trust and deepen community ties.

Growing Membership and Support

When Units highlight their achievements, whether through newsletters, social media, or local media, community members take notice. Member spotlights, event recaps, and photos of service projects all help potential members and volunteers see themselves as part of the ALA mission.

Promoting Events and Initiatives

Events such as fundraisers, food drives, craft shows, blood drives, and youth programs receive greater participation when Units use PR tools to share information. Simple steps like posting on social media, notifying local newspapers, or distributing flyers ensure that Unit efforts reach a wider audience.

The Power of Storytelling

At the heart of Public Relations is storytelling. A photo of a veteran receiving a handmade quilt, a young student smiling with a donated backpack, or members assembling care packages, these moments bring our mission to life. Every Unit has a story. When we share those stories, we honor our members, uplift our mission, and inspire others to join us in service.
