It’s Just a Simple Phone Call – Membership March 2026

Carol Burke, Membership Chairman

Making a phone call to fellow Auxiliary Members regarding membership renewal can feel challenging for many. While there is often concern about appearing intrusive or resembling a bill collector, most individuals actually appreciate being remembered and valued. The effectiveness of this outreach depends largely on the approach taken:

  • Smiling while speaking naturally improves the warmth in your voice.
  • Be brief and concise, as calls will often go to voicemail.
  • Emphasize that this communication is not about collecting a debt but rather demonstrating sincere appreciation and encouraging ongoing support for veterans.
  • Phrases such as “expired” and “past” can help convey a sense of urgency.

Below is a suggested voicemail script for situations where you may not know the member personally:

“Good morning, Mary. This is (your name) from the (your Unit name) American Legion Auxiliary. My phone number is (xxx-xxx-xxxx.) Thank you for your past support of our veterans. We hope all is well, and if not, please let us know how we may assist you. Your membership has expired, and we sincerely hope you will consider renewing and continue supporting our veterans. We appreciate your dedication and hope you remain an active part of your Unit. Again, this is (your name). My phone number is (xxx-xxx-xxxx), and I look forward to hearing from you soon.”

If you are familiar with the individual or they answer the phone, take the opportunity to engage in a brief, personalized conversation. It is possible to encounter members who feel excluded, rejected, or upset. Even if you do not share their perspective, allow them space to express their concerns. Consider using the following phrases:

  • I’m sorry that happened.
  • I understand how you feel.
  • I have felt similarly, but our shared mission motivates my continued involvement.

Have you discussed this with our Unit President? Would you like me to have her contact you?

Above all, remember that positive and friendly outreach promotes higher membership retention. Feedback from these interactions can also help your Unit enhance member relations moving forward.
