The Michigan American Legion Auxiliary Elects Anita L. Mennel President for 2026-2027

BATTLE CREEK (June 28, 2026) – Delegates at the 2026 Annual Convention of The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Michigan elected Anita L. Mennel, Department of Michigan President for 2026-2027.

Anita gained her eligibility through the service of her grandfather, George R. Stewart (USA-WWI), her father, Earl G. Stewart (USA-WWII), and her brother, Walter F. Stewart (USA-Vietnam). Anita is an honorary life member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 16 in Lapeer. She resides in Dryden with her husband, David J. Mennel, whose activity in the Sons of the American Legion inspired her to join the ALA.
 
She has served in her Unit as Chairman of several programs and held the office of Sgt. At Arms, Historian, Chaplain, First Vice President, and six years as Unit President. At the District level, Anita has held the offices of Historian, Chaplain, Secretary, President, and Treasurer. She has held many Chairmanships for several programs.
 
At the Department level, Anita has held Chairmanships of the following Committees: Music, Membership, Leadership, Public Relations, and Legislative. She has served as Historian, Chaplain, Second Vice President, and First Vice President. She has served on the Personnel Committee, Community Service Committee, and as a Nurse for the ALA Girls State Program for many years.
 
Anita is a member of the American Legion Riders Chapter 14 and serves as the Secretary/ Treasurer. She was a nurse for over 44 years and retired in 2023. She serves her church as Financial Director and is a part of the “tech” team. She is a proud Stepmom, Grandma, Aunt, Great Aunt, and Sister. Anita is dedicated, dependable, focused, and a good friend to those who are lucky enough to know her.
