Dawn Gilbert, Department Chaplain
February is often thought of as the month of love, but for members of the American Legion Auxiliary, love is more than a sentiment—it is an action. It is the heartbeat of our mission to serve veterans, military families, and our communities. This month gives us a special opportunity to reflect on how love and faith guide our service.
Valentine’s Day reminds us of hearts and flowers, but true love is shown in the quiet, everyday acts of kindness. When we visit a veteran in a nursing home, send a card to a deployed service member, or offer a prayer for a grieving family, we are living out the values that unite us. These acts may seem small, but they carry great meaning for those who receive them.
As chaplains, we are called to nurture the spiritual well-being of our members and those we serve. February is a perfect time to encourage others to look beyond themselves and share love through service. A simple phone call to check on someone, a note of appreciation, or a moment of prayer can brighten someone’s day and remind them they are not forgotten.
Winter can feel long and heavy, especially here in Michigan, but faith gives us hope that brighter days are ahead. When we lean on faith, we find strength to continue our mission even when challenges arise. Let us remember that our service is not only an act of patriotism but also an expression of faith and compassion.
February also brings Presidents’ Day—a time to honor the leaders who have shaped our nation. As we reflect on their sacrifices and vision, let us renew our own commitment to uphold the values of freedom and service. Our work in the Auxiliary continues that legacy by caring for those who have defended our country.
This month, I encourage each of you to find one way to share love through service. Write a note to a veteran, volunteer at a local event, your Unit, or simply offer a listening ear to someone who needs encouragement. These small acts create ripples of hope and remind us that love is the foundation of all we do. I hope to see many of you at the winter meeting in Port Huron. If you have printed prayers to add to President Dawn’s prayer book, it would be a great time to bring them to me.
