Deanna Cortright, Chairman
We are getting closer to the end-of-year items that must be done. Annual Reports are due in March, and hopefully, many of you attended the Winter Meeting to learn what is required of them.
Elections are coming up in the Spring. Some tips can help when choosing a Treasurer. Many will keep the existing Treasurer, but many Units will elect new ones. You should be aware of the time that being Treasurer involves. This is not a position that only does things at meetings. Deposits must be made, and checks written between meetings. A report must be given at each meeting and should be in writing. A ledger of some type should be kept showing all activity on your accounts. Always remember that a member can request financial information at any time.
When you make any changes to your Treasurer, it will take a minimum of the minutes, with the notation that the new Treasurer needs to be added to the signature card, to get the change made at the bank. You might also want to make sure that those listed on the account are still listed.
If you are the current Treasurer and are not staying, be sure to turn over all information to the new Treasurer. Don’t forget to explain the 990 processes to them. Changing Treasurers is how our Units wind up losing their non-profit status.
As always, I am available for questions or assistance.
