Spring is in The Air
April is a special month for the American Legion Auxiliary as we celebrate the Month of the Military Child and reaffirm our commitment to supporting the families of those who serve. As members of the Auxiliary, we recognize that while our service members make tremendous sacrifices for our nation, their children experience unique challenges that deserve our attention, support, and appreciation.
PURPLE UP! DAY – APRIL 15
A day to wear purple in honor of military children and to raise awareness about their strength and resilience. Purple symbolizes all the branches of the military and represents how military kids grow and thrive no matter where life plants them. These young heroes often face relocations, new schools, and long separations from their loved ones when parents are deployed. Purple Up! It is our opportunity to show them that their courage goes unnoticed.
How Units Can Celebrate in April.
- Wear purple on April 15 and kick off local events recognizing the Month of the Military Child.
- Highlight military children’s experiences in your local newsletter, social media, or meetings to raise awareness of their unique contributions and sacrifices.
- Partner with local schools & community groups to host a Purple Up event or support military families in your area.
- Encourage community awareness by asking the Post or city marquees to display messages about the Month of the Military Child and Purple Up! Day.
April is also the month of renewal, and renewal is exactly what membership is about. Renew, recruit, and retain. A simple phone call, a handwritten note, or a friendly reminder can make all the difference. Many members simply need a personal connection to feel valued and encouraged to continue their service.
Members stay where they feel welcomed and needed. Encourage participation in meetings, committees, and service projects. Recognize accomplishments. Celebrate milestones. When members feel appreciated, they remain committed.
