Verbiage and Definitions – From the Desk of the Executive Director

Shannon Werner, Executive Director, Secretary & Treasurer

Thank you to all who attended and contributed to our recent Department of Michigan Convention. We always have successful gatherings no matter the obstacles. This event was no different. We learned some things to do/not to do going forward, and to me, the experience is the most important part of our ritualistic meetings.

Our organization is unique in its non-profit designation, hierarchy and verbiage. To get us all using the same words, I offer the following definitions:

  • Department is the combination and/or total of all our members in the State of Michigan. Each state is considered a Department within the American Legion Auxiliary National Organization.
  • Headquarters is the office building where me and the membership coordinator/archivist work, meetings take place and the managing of the actual business occurs.
  • The DEC Department Executive Committee is a group consisting of our Officers (Department President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Parliamentarian, etc.) District Presidents and Past Department Presidents.
  • Executive Director is one of my titles. I am Shannon, I am not “Department”. * Please see above.
  • A Unit is a group of eligible members who are in the American Legion Auxiliary and have been chartered as such.
  • A Post is a group of American Legion eligible Veterans who have joined the organization or used when referring to an American Legion location.
  • A.L.A.M.I.S. (American Legion Auxiliary Management Information System) National would like everyone to refrain from using this acronym as a word; each letter should be pronounced. It is a National Database owned and managed by the National organization.
